Not enough people have felt the benefits of globalization and the impressive rise of outward and inward investment over the last decade. In this situation, it becomes ever more important that the region spawns top management personnel – capable of running global firms – from all kinds of backgrounds, and not just those fortunate enough to be born into upper-class families.

This was the policy of ‘reverse-outsourcing’, in which Embraer contracted out the manufacture of many of its components to the likes of GE and Honeywell, while it assembled all the planes itself. This made it far more flexible than the vertically and horizontally integrated Bombardier, which did everything internally.
