In my opinion, hate is the last remnant, the desire of, and the defence against, the primitive object-love (or the dependent archaic love). This means that we hate people who, though very important to us, do not love us and refuse to become our co-operative partners despite our best efforts to win their affection. (1952a:148) The importance of this is that, for Balint, hatred is always secondary to love and as previously mentioned, only Fairbairn, among the British object relations school, has a similar view of this relationship, although he does not follow Balint in the belief in primary object love.
In later works, there will be further developments described from this nodal point. Similarly, psychoanalytical technique is also examined from the viewpoint of object relations. Rather than concentrating on the patient and the patient’s transference, Balint has followed the lead given by Ferenczi of investigating the analyst’s contribution to the analytic situation. The counter-transference responses, the theoretical orientation, the technical terminology of the analyst are seen to influence, and perhaps produce, the very phenomena being observed in the analytic situation.
At the other extreme, the philobatic world consists of friendly expanses dotted more or less densely with dangerous and unpredictable objects. One lives in the friendly expanses, carefully avoiding hazardous contacts with potentially dangerous objects. Whereas the ocnophilic world is structured by close proximity and touch, the philobatic world is structured by safe distance and sight. (1959a:34) The ocnophil lives in the illusion that his objects will protect him, whereas the philobat’s illusion is that his ego skills will protect him from hazardous, potentially unfriendly objects.
