Users are extremely skeptical and cynical about society, government, and religion. The nonusers’ data present an entirely different picture. They are strongly oriented toward positive personal qualities, such as being honest, responsible, and good, and these are important both for their own self-images and for their images of family and of friends. Nonusers are more concerned than users with intimacy in relationships. Caring, trust, love, sharing, listening, and talking are important elements in their lives.

The nonusers do not share this view at all. The nonusers do not see the fun, good feelings, and social connections that the users do. Their concern is for the impact that involvement with alcohol and drugs has on others and on themselves. Disapproval and Concern for Dangers Nonusers express extreme disapproval of alcohol and drugs and are especially concerned about the dangers of use to self and others. They see drug and alcohol use as potentially fatal and they have much greater awareness of the illegality of drugs and marijuana and their connection to crime.

Trouble and problems are recognized as situations where discipline is required. There is some ambiguity in the negative responses— for example, bad meaning a negative attitude toward DISCIPLINE or bad meaning bad behavior calling for discipline. The users emphasized various settings where discipline is needed (school, work, home); they also think of sports, football, and exercise. Nonusers, on the other hand, expressed strong approval of discipline and authority and emphasize the rules and expectations for proper behavior.
